The Greek letter π is Pi, Pi is an irrational number. Untill the year 1001 Pi was a ten decimal number. Many may not believe it, but Pi was know to ancient Egyptian, Babylonian, Indian, Greek and several other geometers. In 1424 a Persian astronomer by the name of Jamshīd al-Kāshī discovered sixteen decimals of Pi. A German mathematician one upped Jamshīd al-Kāshī by computing thirty-three decimals, his name was Ludolph van Ceulen(1540-1610). Issac Newton also tried to compute decimals of Pi, but only came up with 15 decimals. The absolute first to ever calculate 100 decimals was John Machin. Even before the first computer was able to calculate Pi, many mathematicians obsessed with it. Overall all to this day the value of Pi has been computed to a total of a billion or more decimals, since it is a constant irrational number Pi will never end. Pi has been in many major formulas and is a number that every mathematician can refelct on. Pi itself is a major part of mathematics and anything that relates to it.

The Oldest Formula to Calculate the Decimals in Pi

    Power series expansion of atan(x)atan(x) = x − x3 / 3 + x5 / 5 − ... together with 
    formulas like pi=16*atan(1/5)-4*atan(1/239). 
    This gives about 1.4 decimals per term.
