REI.3 – Solving Inequalities

The Standard

I can solve inequalities involving one variable.

Example

10 > 4x + 2
  8 > 4x  (subtracted 2 from both sides)
  2 > x  (divided both sides by 4)

Careful

* For the problem below, notice how the inequality switches from > to < because we divide by a negative number
   (the same is true whenever we multiply by a negative number)

10 > -4x + 2
  8 > -4x  (subtracted 2 from both sides)
 -2 < (divided both sides by -4)
